Social media tools were introduced to the NSTF Awards Web site to create platforms for the NSTF Award winners and their young followers to communicate.
Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read other users' updates known as tweets. Twitter has been implemented as part of a community informatics project to announce activities of NSTF Award winners at various tertiary institutions across South Africa.
Facebook is a global social networking tool that allows joining of “friends” to communicate on any topic. Its name stems from the colloquial name of books given at the start of the academic year by university administrations with the intention of helping students get to know each other better. Facebook forms a platform for students to interact with NSTF Award winners on their fields of expertise, areas of research and career opportunities.
