NOMINATION INFORMATION

Section 4: The criteria used in assessing the nominations

In respect of categories H and J the criteria 1, 2, 3, 7, 8 and 10 will receive greater weight than the others in recognition of the importance of the research contribution.

1. The Contribution to the Advancement of Science/Technological Innovation/New Knowledge Generated - The Inputs:

1.1 Describe where, how and why the work/project was started or was undertaken and the resources that were available or became available during the course of the execution.

1.2 Describe the foundation on which the work was built, particularly work by predecessors.

1.3 Describe the nature of the collaboration with other individuals and organisations, where relevant.

2. The Contribution to the Advancement of Science/Technological Innovation/New Knowledge Generated - The Research Process:

2.1 Describe the processes that were undertaken in the course of the project/work. e.g. Were computer models, physical models or pilot plants built? Were trials undertaken?

2.2 Describe the scientific, engineering or technological uniqueness and novelty of the processes and their contribution to the advancement of science.

3. The Contribution to the Advancement of Science/Technological Innovation/New Knowledge Generated - The Outputs:

3.1 Describe the scientific or technological uniqueness of the contribution to the advancement of SET.

3.2 Describe the novelty of the work/projects and the extent to which this work/projects make a contribution to the creation of new SET knowledge, both nationally and internationally?

4. The Practical Application / Implementation:
Describe how this knowledge has been applied in practical applications and situations.

5. Commercial or Economic Impact:

5.1 Describe the commercial or economic aspects and impact of this work/ projects?

5.2 How did this output create wealth both for the individual and/or the organisations involved?

6. Relevance to South Africa and its People and Resultant Contribution to S&T policy:

6.1 To what extent have the outputs and findings been applied to improve the quality of life of, or generate wealth for the people of South Africa?

6.2 How has this output impacted on the people and wider communities involved?

6.3 How has this output impacted on the environment and what has been the impact?

6.4 How did this work/projects contribute to the establishment or improvement of Science, Engineering and Technology Policy in South Africa alternatively in the generation of standards or other forms of technology?

7. Promotion of Public Understanding of Science and Technology:
To what extent has the work/projects been made public and have contributed to the promotion of public understanding of science and technology? The technical papers and other formal publications should be identified and quantified, as well as the exposition to the general public through the media as it relates to the relevant period defined in the category. The adjudicators need to be assisted by the identification for them of those publications and conference appearances in a lifetime list which are relevant to the nomination.

8. Promotion of Education in this field as a contribution to the Public Understanding of SET:
To what extent has the work/project contributed to the furtherance of education? In this regard contributions at all three levels, i.e. primary and secondary schools, tertiary institutions, actual individual studies, the students mentored or otherwise involved in the work of a more general nature should be reported on where applicable.

9. Social and Economic Sustainability:

9.1 What are the vision and plans for the future growth and success of the work/project? Where is it really going?

9.2 What future value will be added to the South African community and how will this project or organisation be supported? Will this work/project add value to the community and will it be sustainable? In the case of organisations an analysis of the impact on the finances of the organisation needs to be given.

10. National and International Recognition
Has this work/project or the individuals received any recognition from any bodies outside the immediate working environment of the nominee, considered nationally and internationally?

Section 4.2: The criteria used in assessing the nominations in categories D, E and F

1. The Contribution to the Advancement of Science/Technological Innovation/New Knowledge Generated - The Inputs:

1.1 In this context innovation is meant to include engineering, and associated technology or medical or social concepts or methodologies.  Describe the foundation on which the innovation was built, particularly work by predecessors. Indicate what if any of the science or technology was researched in South Africa and where this was undertaken.

1.2 Describe where, how and why the development of the innovation was undertaken and the resources that were available or became available during the course of its development. Indicate clearly whether the technology, engineering or medical or social concepts or methodolgies which have been uniquely developed in SA and where

1.3 Describe the nature of the collaboration with other individuals and organisations, where relevant to the innovation. In particular motivate why an individual or a team is nominated and delineate the roles played.  

2. The Contribution to the Advancement of Science/Technological Innovation/New Knowledge Generated - The Research Process:

2.1 Describe the processes that were undertaken in the course of the research and development of the innovation, e.g. Were computer models, physical models or pilot plants built? Were trials undertaken?

2.2 Describe the scientific, engineering or technological uniqueness and novelty of the processes and their contribution to the advancement of SET.

3. The Contribution to the Advancement of Science/Technological Innovation/New Knowledge Generated - The Outputs:

3.1 In this context, outputs should comprise the elements of the science , engineering or technology which  has led to the application to be described under 4.

3.2 Describe the scientific or technological uniqueness of these outputs as a contribution to the advancement of SET.

3. Describe the novelty of the innovation and the extent to which this innovation makes a contribution to the creation of new SET knowledge, both nationally and internationally?

4. The Practical Application / Implementation:
Describe how this innovation has been applied in practical applications and situations such as a project, or a product, or a range of products or a methodology or any other form of applied output completed in the recent past. What is the extent of the commercialization, or use to which the innovation has been put.

5. Commercial or Economic Impact:

5.1 Describe the commercial or economic aspects and impact of this innovation

5.2 How did this output create wealth both for the individual the team  and/or the organisations involved?

6. Relevance to South Africa and its People and Resultant Contribution to S&T policy:

6.1 To what extent has the innovation  been applied to improve the quality of life of, or generate wealth for the people of South Africa?

6.2 How has the innovation impacted on the people and wider communities involved?

6.3 How has the innovation impacted on the environment and what has been the impact?

6.4 How did the development of this innovation contribute to the establishment or improvement of Science, Engineering and Technology Policy in South Africa alternatively in the generation of standards or other forms of technology?

7. Promotion of Public Understanding of Science and Technology:
To what extent has the innovation been made public and has contributed to the promotion of public understanding of science and technology? The technical papers, conference presentations, lectures and other formal publications should be identified and quantified, as well as the exposition to the general public through the media..

8. Promotion of Education in this field as a contribution to the Public Understanding of SET:
To what extent has the development of the innovation  contributed to the furtherance of education? In this regard contributions at all three levels, i.e. primary and secondary schools, tertiary institutions, actual individual studies, students trained or otherwise involved in the work and the training of the users and public should be reported on where applicable.

9. Social and Economic Sustainability:

9.1 What is the vision and plans for the further development of the science and technology employed in the innovation? Where is it really going?

9.2 What future value will be added to the South African community and how will this vision be supported and will it be sustainable? An analysis of the impact on the finances of the organisation which has supported the development needs to be given.

10. National and International Recognition
Has this individual or team, received any recognition from any bodies outside the immediate working environment of the nominee/s, considered nationally and internationally for this innovation?

Section 4.3: The criteria used in assessing the nominations in category G
The Purpose of this award is set out in section 8

The criteria 1 to 10 are subordinate to criteria 11 and required for background information on the work of the nominee

1. The Contribution to the Advancement of Science/Technological Innovation/New Knowledge Generated - The Inputs:

1.1 Describe where, how and why the work/project was started or was undertaken and the resources that were available or became available during the course of the execution.

1.2 Describe the foundation on which the work was built, particularly work by predecessors.

The adjudicators need to be assisted by the identification for them of those publications and conference appearances in a lifetime list which are relevant to the nomination.

8. Promotion of Education in this field as a contribution to the Public Understanding of SET:
To what extent has the work/project contributed to the furtherance of education? In this regard contributions at all three levels, i.e. primary and secondary schools, tertiary institutions, actual individual studies, the students mentored or otherwise involved in the work of a more general nature should be reported on where applicable.

9. Social and Economic Sustainability:

9.1 What are the vision and plans for the future growth and success of the work/project? Where is it really going?

9.2 What future value will be added to the South African community and how will this project or organisation be supported? Will this work/project add value to the community and will it be sustainable? In the case of organisations an analysis of the impact on the finances of the organisation needs to be given.

10. National and International Recognition
Has this work/project or the individuals received any recognition from any bodies outside the immediate working environment of the nominee, considered nationally and internationally?

11. The following specific factors are considered:

  • the numbers of black South African postgraduate students trained who completed their studies;
  • assistance to students to present and publish research work;
  • provision of mentorship, support and the development of essential skills in the world of business and work, and.
  • continued interest shown in the individuals’ professional advancement.

(NOTE: The NSTF and the adjudication panel recognises these are not directly comparable across the different disciplines and due account is taken in the assessment)

Section 4.4: The criteria used in assessing the nominations in category K: Science Communication for Public Awareness

The “Science communication for Public Awareness Category” seeks to award communicators (including researchers) who promote public dialogue around and engagement with SET. Weighting in assessment of criteria for 3 and 7 will therefore be higher than for the other categories. The key criteria for judging this category will be:

  • The quality of communication products;
  • The diverse methods and quality of delivery of messages; and
  • The reach of the communication to diverse audiences.

1. The Contribution to the Advancement of Science/Technological Innovation/New Knowledge Generated - The Inputs:

1.1 Describe the information used to provide the basis of the communication product/s. What input was provided by others? Identify those areas where original means of communication was undertaken.

1.2 Describe the novelty of the delivery of the communication.

1.3 Describe the nature of the collaboration with other individuals and organisations, where relevant.

2. The Contribution to the Advancement of Science/Technological Innovation/New Knowledge Generated - The Communication Process:

2.1  Describe the methodology followed to ensure the scientific correctness and high quality of the messages communicated.

2.2 Describe how the messages are contributing towards the advancement of SET.

2.3 Describe how public engagement is ensured in the communication process.

3. The Contribution to the Advancement of Science/Technological Innovation/New Knowledge Generated - The Outputs:

3.1 Provide a summary and description of the communications for which the nominee has been responsible. This should cover all the material at all levels, formal, informal, lectures, presentations, news articles, radio interviews, public talks, illustrations, books, dramas, etc.

3.2 Describe the uniqueness and novelty of the contribution to the advancement of SET.

4. The Practical Application / Implementation:
Describe the reach of the communication messages and, if applicable, how the communications have led to practical applications and situations or have influenced the behaviour of the public, or the authorities. What response has been elicited from the public audiences?

5. Commercial or Economic Impact:
Describe the commercial or economic aspects and impact of the material covered by the communications and the consequences in these terms of the results described in 4.

6. Relevance to South Africa and its People and Resultant Contribution to SET policy:

6.1 To what extent has the communication led to improvement in the quality of life of, or generate wealth for the people of South Africa?

6.2 How has this communication impacted on the people and wider communities involved?

6.3 How has this output impacted on the environment and what has been the impact?

6.4 How did this communication contribute to the establishment or improvement of Science and Technology Policy in South Africa alternatively in the generation of standards or other forms of technology?

7. Promotion of Public Understanding of Science Engineering and Technology:

7.1 Describe the diversity of reach of the communications and how this is established. Provide an indication of how public awareness of the material covered has increased and whether this has increased the public or developmental involvement in related issues. How effective have the communications been?

7.2 Describe the impact on awareness of young people of careers in Science, Engineering and Technology

8. Promotion of Education in this field as a contribution to the Public Understanding of SET:
To what extent has the communications contributed to the furtherance of education of either the public at large or of learners and students? In this regard impacts at all three levels, i.e. primary and secondary schools, tertiary institutions, actual individual studies, the students mentored or otherwise involved in the work of a more general nature should be reported on where applicable.

9. Social and Economic Sustainability:

9.1 What are the vision and plans for the future?  What further value to the South African community can be provided by the communications envisioned?

9.2 Are the vehicles of communication sustainable?

10. National and International Recognition
Has this communication or the individuals received any recognition from any bodies outside the immediate working environment of the nominee, considered nationally and internationally? Has the individual received any awards or grants for science communication projects (i.e. National Science Week)?
